The presence of <strong>contaminants<\/strong> can cause premature wear on the internal surfaces of the hydraulic system, encourage leakage, and block the flow lines.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Filters serve to screen larger or specifically sized particles out of <strong>hydraulic fluid<\/strong> to promote efficient machine operation.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Before going into detail about <strong>hydraulic filters<\/strong>, the advantages they provide, and the importance of correct maintenance and replacement, we will consider how the hydraulic system of an excavator works and what its most frequent faults are likely to be.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Getting to know a hydraulic system<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The <strong>hydraulic systems of excavators<\/strong> comprise a large number and variety of elements, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Valves<\/li>\n<li>Pumps<\/li>\n<li>Non-return valves for filters<\/li>\n<li>Counterbalance valves<\/li>\n<li>Hydraulic cylinders<\/li>\n<li>Pump filters<\/li>\n<li>Pipes and gaskets capable of resisting high pressures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">All the elements that make up hydraulic systems must be extremely <strong>strong and durable<\/strong>.<br \/>\nExcavators also have at least <strong>six hydraulic actuators<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Arm<\/li>\n<li>Lifting arm<\/li>\n<li>Bucket<\/li>\n<li>Rotation<\/li>\n<li>Left movement<\/li>\n<li>Right movement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">These <strong>diversified operating functions<\/strong> requires particular demands to the hydraulic system.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">During operations an excavator&#8217;s hydraulic system needs to drive all the <strong>movements<\/strong> fluidly, simultaneously, responsively, and independently.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">High volume <strong>hydraulic fluid<\/strong> flows ensure quick movements during operation.\u00a0This is achieved using differential cylinders with hydraulic flow rate classifiers of double the volume of the installed pump.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The <strong>fluid serves four basic functions<\/strong> in a hydraulic system:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It generates force and movement to transform flow into pressure.<\/li>\n<li>It fills the gaps between various metal surfaces, creating a seal that helps exclude contaminants by forming a pressure barrier.<\/li>\n<li>It acts as a lubricant for various metal surfaces.<\/li>\n<li>It cools the system components.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Types of faults in excavator hydraulic systems<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There are essentially three <strong>types of hydraulic faults<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Catastrophic<\/strong>, when a large sized particle enters a pump or valve causing a shovel to jam.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Intermittent<\/strong>, when contaminants accumulate in a trigger valve preventing it from closing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Degradation<\/strong> resulting from abrasive wear, corrosion, or surface fatigue of a component.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When particles enter the gaps between surfaces in a moving pump they can grind against the surfaces. This can cause <strong>stress and scratching<\/strong>, possibly even breaking up the pump components into metal particles.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If a cylinder does not have adequate <strong>gaskets<\/strong> for its rod, dirt may penetrate and damage the <strong>valves<\/strong> before being caught in a filter on the return line. Wear on the rod seals is normal since they become more rounded as they clear fluid from the rod or cylinder. If there is no intervention, the result will be a <strong>leaky cylinder<\/strong> allowing the penetration of dust and dirt.\u00a0Rod gaskets must be replaced before they start leaking.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Vents<\/strong> allow adequate air movement inside the hydraulic reservoir, excluding <strong>atmospheric contaminants<\/strong> like dust and water drops. Those supplied as standard on heavy equipment are not always equipped with filtered vents.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Finally, to maximise the elimination of harmful particles, a <strong>breather equipped with a hydraulic filter<\/strong> should be installed.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">How hydraulic filters work<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The role of a filter is basically to screen <strong>the hydraulic system against foreign particles <\/strong><strong>circulating<\/strong> in the fluid that could cause damage by abrasion. These particles can originate from external <strong>infiltration<\/strong>, wear inside the system, or they could derive from the production process.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Hydraulic filters are generally <strong>cylindrical devices<\/strong> with fluid inlets and outlets on opposite sides. The fluid is channelled through the filter seating and passes through the filter medium. <strong>The hydraulic filter retains contaminants<\/strong> while cleaned fluid moves through a central channel towards the outlet. Any contaminants remain <strong>trapped<\/strong> in the filter medium.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The maintenance team is responsible for monitoring the filter system regularly and ensuring that it is working optimally. If the electronic or mechanical indicators signal that <strong>the filter is dirty or blocked<\/strong>, it must be immediately substituted.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">The main advantages of hydraulic filters<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A <strong>filter offers many advantages<\/strong> that help ensure the reliable operation of a hydraulic system, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Elimination of foreign particles in the hydraulic fluid.<\/li>\n<li>Protecting the hydraulic system from hazards deriving from particulate contaminants.<\/li>\n<li>Overall improved efficiency and productivity.<\/li>\n<li>Extending the useful life of the hydraulic system.<\/li>\n<li>Reduced maintenance costs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Guidelines for changing filters<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Establishing a routine preventive maintenance schedule is always the most practical and economical option.
